About Me
For as long as I can remember I have been deeply interested in human psychology and intrigued by what makes us think and feel the way we do. Growing up in Northern Ireland I was curious about how our environments, families and cultures both influence and shape our beliefs, values and behaviour. This interest combined with an affinity for working with people and natural ease hearing the stories of others led me to have a career which I am very passionate about.
My Approach
Over 10 years experience in both NHS and private settings has taught me that therapy can, at times, be an emotionally challenging process. However, I strongly believe that therapy can provide us with a means of understanding ourselves better and enriching our lives as a result. I am strongly influenced by ideas from solution-focused therapy and subscribe to the view that we all have the ability to find solutions and ways of coping with the challenges that life throws at us. My job as a therapist is to help the people I work with to find those solutions, consider alternative perspectives and ultimately empower them to become their own therapist.
Through studying my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Oxford University I have gained experience and knowledge of a wide range of therapeutic approaches and psychological difficulties across the lifespan. My practice is primarily informed by Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Whilst I am aware of the evidence base for effective treatment I am respectful that every person is an individual so I am conscious that finding the most effective way of dealing with an issue involves starting with finding out what the person sat with me wants to gain from therapy. I am very interested in 'third wave' approaches within CBT such as Acceptance & Commitment Therapy and Compassion Focused Therapy.
Issues I work with
Common issues I work with include, but are not limited to; depression/low mood, mood disorders, anxiety-related conditions, panic attacks, phobias, anger issues, stress, dealing with life transitions/changes (loss, bereavement, retirement), postnatal depression, low self-esteem/self-confidence and relationship problems. I also have experience working with people with physical and learning disabilities.
